Itinerary

Day 1

Checkin at The Sparrow Hotel Stockholm and join us for welcome drinks and dinner.

Day 2

Spending the morning in Östermalm we visit the iconic Stockholm stores and showrooms of Svenst Tenn, Märta Måås Fjetterström and Streco rugs (formerly JP Willborg).

Svenskt Tenn was founded in 1924 by Estrid Ericson who was later joined by Josef Frank. Together they created an interior design company that has become a Swedish institution. Svenskt Tenn’s beautiful store on Strandvägen includes an extensive printed textiles department, soft furnishings, exhibitions, cafe and an interior design studio.

In the afternoon we head to Djurgården for a private guided visit of Handarbetets Vänner (Friends of Handicraft). Established in 1874, Handarbetets Vänner is one of the most distinguished handicraft and textile institutions in Sweden and includes an atelier, textile art & weaving school and gallery. Also on Djurgården we visit the museum Nordiska Museet which presents exhibitions on Nordic life and culture.

Lastly we visit the Svensk Hemslöjd store in Norrmalm. The Association for Swedish Handicraft, Svensk Hemslöjd was established in 1899 and today their store showcases the best in Swedish crafts, including woven textiles, embroidery and knitting. They also sell craft materials, kits, books and magazines.

Day 3

We begin with a visit to Stockholm’s superb museum of art and design, the National Museum. The National Museum collections comprise art from 1500-1900 and applied arts and design from the early Middle Ages to present day.

Heading to Södermalm, we visit K.A. Almgren Sidenväveri, contemporary textiles gallery Fibrespace and textiles store Tygverket.

K.A. Almgren Sidenväveri is a silk factory museum and the last silk weaving workshop in the Nordic countries. Silk textiles are woven here on original machines in their original factory environment from the 1860s. There is a textile collection and an exhibition presenting historical aspects of Sweden’s textile industry.

Day 4

Departing Stockholm we travel by train to Hässleholm in southern Sweden, then drive to the town of Broby where we checkin at our boutique hotel Broby Gästgivaregård.

Days 5 - 9

Gunvor’s 5 day weaving workshop will be held at Glimåkra VävstolsMuseet (Loom Museum), a short drive from Broby. The workshop will explore traditional Swedish art weaving techniques including Halvkrabba, Krabbasnår, Rölakan and Dukagång. Participants will have the opportunity to create a small sample of the various techniques or to concentrate on one technique.

During the workshop there will also be the opportunity to visit the atelier of award winning textile artist and tapestry weaver Annika Ekdahl. Annika creates large scale narrative works utilising Renaissance and Baroque techniques with a modern approach that includes digital techniques. Annika’s tapestries have been exhibited extensively and are held in collections internationally.
