Swedish school of craft and design Capellagården was founded by designer Carl Malmsten and his wife Siv on the island of Öland in 1960. Capellagården has become a meeting place for craftspeople from Sweden and from all over the world, offering courses in furniture making, building maintenance, ceramics, horticulture and textiles.

The school is located in the small village of Vickleby in the world heritage agricultural landscape of southern Öland, 30 minutes drive from Kalmar. Classrooms and workshops are housed in former farmhouses and together with the large garden create a special environment and atmosphere.

Capellagården grow their own flax and cultivate a dye plant garden, allowing them to produce their own linen and pigments for dyeing. They have customised a workshop for us, “Linen – from fibre to fabric, dyed with natural pigments” which includes processing linen from fibre to thread, dyeing and weaving.

The workshop will be conducted by Berit Grybäck and Linda Zetterman. Berit specialises in weaving and linen, and is the head of Capellagården’s textile department. She has been teaching at Capellagården since 2004 and is the former vice-chairman of the Swedish Weaving Council.

Linda is a textile artist, designer and dyer with more than twenty years experience in indigo dyeing. She has run the dyeing project "From seed to dye" at Capellagården since 2020.

Workshop

The 5 day workshop “Linen – from fibre to fabric, dyed with natural pigments” will focus on process and the creation of a textile approximately 20cm x 50cm which can be sewn into a handscrub or pouch.

Berit and Linda’s workshop will include the following, with Berit as instructor everyday and Linda as instructor for 2 days.

  • Processing linen from fibre to thread

  • Dyeing with natural pigments

  • Weaving a sample in linen with your own handspun and dyed yarn

This workshop is suitable for weavers with a small amount of experience as well as intermediate and experienced weavers. Workshop hours are approximately 9am - 4pm. Daily lunches and refreshments are included.
