Explore one of southern Sweden’s most significant textile traditions in this Scanian woolen embroidery workshop with Eva Berg at Hemslöjden i Skåne in Landskrona. This trip includes a 5 day embroidery workshop plus museum and atelier visits in Landskrona, Lund and Blentarp in southern Sweden.

Scanian woolen embroidery, skånskt yllebroderi in Swedish, is a traditional form of embroidery and textile art from the Skåne region in southern Sweden. Characterised by colourful motifs often on a dark background, these richly embroidered patterns were traditionally displayed on carriage cushions, bridal cushions and bridal coverlets during the 1750s - 1850s. Today it remains a highly appreciated textile art and popular handcraft in southern Sweden.

Swedish craft association Hemslöjden i Skåne will host our 5 day embroidery workshop at their premises in Landskrona. In addition to offering a program of courses in traditional Scanian handcrafts, the association houses an excellent craft shop and online store, a textile archive and holds exhibitions and lectures.

Workshop instructor Eva Berg is a highly experienced Swedish embroidery expert and recognised master craftsman. She was trained at Handarbetets Vänner in Stockholm and has taught embroidery courses in Sweden and abroad for over 30 years. She co-authored the woolen embroidery texts ‘Brodera på ylle!’ and ‘Yllebroderier - narrative folk art from the Nordics’, and is a former manager of the Hemslöjden Skåne craft shop. Eva’s workshop is suitable for all levels, including beginners through to experienced embroiderers.

Itinerary

Day 1

Checkin at Hotel Öresund in Landskrona from 3pm then join us for welcome drinks and dinner. (Train connections are available between Landskrona Sweden and Copenhagen city and international airport Denmark)

Days 2-6

During a 5 day workshop at Hemslöjden i Skåne learn the techniques and stitches of Scanian woolen embroidery according to the tradition of southern Sweden. Eva’s workshop will cover the entire process, from transfer of patterns from paper to woolen fabric, to assembly and finishing of embroidered fabrics in the style of traditional cushions.

There will also be the opportunity to view antique textiles and woolen embroideries from Hemlöjden’s archives and hear about the history of this textile technique, so special to southern Sweden. Workshop hours are 10am - 4pm daily, fika and lunches are included.

Outside workshop hours we’ll visit the textile collection at Landskrona Museum and ateliers of local textile artists including master weaver Bettina Posselt. Bettina’s atelier Handväfveri is located in Landskrona’s Citadel, one of the Nordic region’s best-preserved 16th century fortresses.

Day 7

Taking a day out in Skåne, we drive from Landskrona to the textile museum at Lilla Rödde farm in Blentarp. Surrounded by 25 hectares of forest and pastures, the Lilla Rödde farmhouse contains the dowry textiles and lifetimes’ work of two sisters who never married.

From the mid-18th to mid-19th centuries textiles of exceptional quality were made by the women of Skåne for wedding ceremonies and to be used as covers for cushions, benches and beds. Often these textiles would be woven by brides-to-be for dowry chests, with traditional methods of dyeing, weaving and decorating being passed on from mothers to daughters. The textiles at Lilla Rödde are an excellent example of this tradition displayed in its original context.

Following our visit at Lilla Rödde we drive to Lund where we spend the rest of the day exploring the museums, shops, cafes and restaurants of this attractive Swedish town. We visit one of southern Sweden’s most significant cultural sites, Kulturen, which includes both indoor exhibitions and the world’s second oldest open-air museum (after Skansen in Stockholm).

Kulturen features an extensive collection of historic buildings and interiors from the Middle Ages to the 1930s, set in beautiful gardens. There are also around twenty temporary and permanent exhibitions ranging from folk art to modern design, from medieval history to the present day and from local to global culture. Kulturen’s archive also holds the largest collection of Scanian woolen embroidery in the world.

We get together for our final dinner in Lund and then take the short train ride to Landskrona before returning to our hotel.

Following checkout at Hotel Öresund in the morning taxi transfers will be arranged to Landskrona train station, where we depart.
